Podcast #3 Principles of Design

Define principles of design?
Concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition
What do the principles of design affect?
Affects the expressive content
What is the principle of repetition?
Repeating some aspect or element of the design throughout the entire document
Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience?
Acts a a visual key that ties a piece together
What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs?
bold font,thick lines,color
What should you avoid when working with repetition?
NOt to be to repetitive
What is the principle of proportion/scale?
The relative size and scale of the various elements in a design
What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size?
The human body
How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter?
An unusual or unexpected scale
What is the principle of balance?
Distribution of heavy and light elements on a page
Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater?
Large elements look heavies than smaller elements
What is another name for symmetrical balance?
Counter balance
Define symmetrical balance?
occurs when the weight of a composition is evenly distributed
What is another name for asymmetrical balance?
informal balance
Define asymmetrical balance?
occurs when the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around the axis
What is the principle of emphasis?
stressing of a particular area of focus
What happens to a design that has no focus?
It has to many components
What is a focal point and how is it created?
area where eye tends to go first
How many components of a composition can be a focal point?
one component
What ways can emphasis be created in a design?
direction,size,shape
What is the principle of unity?
Is the wholeness of composition
What three ways can unity be obtained?
1.Make things similar

2.Direct vision by a line

3.Putting objects colse to one another

What is the principle of variety?
Pertains to differences and diversity its what makes a work of art interesting
What ways can a designer add variety to a design?
Right balance of design
Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety?
Wont look good
What is figure?
Form/silhouette or shape
What is another name for figure?
positive space
What is ground?
The surrounding area around a figure
What is another name for ground?
negative space
When a composition is abstract (has no recognizable subject) what will the figure depend on? What does that mean?  It doesn't have recognizable matter, the relationship between visual elements

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole?
So it all fits together
What is the principle of rhythm?
Continuity, recurrence or organized movement in time and space
How is rhythm achieved?
Achieved through the orderly repetition of any element
What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1. Intervals between the elements

2. More organic flowing

3. A sequence of shapes

How does rhythm help a composition/design?
Send a message by controlling the viewers eye movement
What is the principle of contrast?
Occurs when two related elements are different
How can contrast help a design?
Guide the viewer through it
What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design?
It can be boring or it can be confusing
What is the key to working with contrast?
Make sure the differences are obvious
What are some common ways of creating contrast?

size,value,color,type

Andy Warhol

Within what art genre did Warhol work?
Popart

Define the genre?
Pop removes the material from its context and isolates the object, or combines it with other objects, for contemplation.

During what years was he alive?
He was born in August 6, 1928 and died in February 22,1987.

Moon Walk
In this picture he mainly uses blue, black, red, and white
using a accented neutral color scheme to make the picture.
The picture makes the objects almost like their negatively colored.

Hammer and Sickle
In this picture the colors are mainly red, black, and white.
It would probably be a accented neutral color scheme.
The picture highlights the area around the object in some parts.

Color Schemes

The picture above uses a accented neutral color scheme using black, white, orange,  green, and blue.

The picture above uses a monochromatic color scheme only using blue.

The picture above uses a complementary color scheme orange and blue.

The picture above uses a split-complementary color scheme using green, orange, and violet.
The picture above uses a analogous color scheme. Using red,
red-orange, and orange as its colors giving it a bright effect.

Review Week #9

Compare and contrast vector graphics and pixel images. Both vector and pixel can be constructed on the computer, but a vector graphic is constructed from lines, shapes, and curves. While a pixel image is constructed of pixels (picture element).
What resolution is necessary to print raster images?
The resolution needed to print a raster image is 300dpi.
What resolution is necessary to display raster images on the internet?

The resolution needed to display raster images on the internet is 72dpi.

Steve Jobs

Who is Steve Jobs?
Steve jobs was the co-founder and former CEO of Apple. He was the greatest inventor of the time making many inventions that have changed the world we live in today. Changing the way we live in many ways and how we communicate. Sadly he has recently past away, but we will remember him for a long time.

What company was he CEO for many years?
He was the CEO and Co-Founder of the company Apple.

What did he do for the computer industry?
He created many computers they were much different than other companies with color graphics and an open architecture which no one else had with their computer.

How did this man impact the graphic design industry?
He created many programs for graphic design and also made hardware that would be able to help make it.

Review Week #8

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition?
It maximizes productivity, relax the body, and minimize visual fatigue

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers?
Its shows visual relations between colors.

In the picture the author uses neutral colors to show how its cold where the penguins are in this picture. Also to emphasize the terrain that the picture is showing.

We see a certain color in a object because an object can absorb or reflect one or more colors. These colors are different hues that get reflected by a glass prism.

Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
Maximize productivity, relax the body, and minimize visual fatigue.
Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?

Describe white light?
Equal parts of all colors.
How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
absorb or reflect or one or more colors.
What is a glass prism?
a transparent triangular object that breaks white light.
What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
